This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation MK III (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Ford Focus sedan or hatchback in removing the interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM speaker, add soundproofing material, replace the power window motor or fix a faulty electrical switch. Owners of other similar Ford vehicles built upon the 'Global C' (C1) compact car platform such as the C-Max, Escape, Kuga and Transit Connect may also find these DIY instructions to be useful. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a small flathead screwdriver, a star bit screwdriver, and a standard sized flathead screwdriver or a plastic automotive trim. To remove the speaker, you'll need the Torx T-25 screwdriver, a (or a 6mm still works) and a 1/4' drive ratchet.
2012-14 Ford Focus Driver Left Front Door Trim Panel Interior Black Ebony (Fits: 2012 Ford Focus) You are looking at a 2012-14 Ford Focus driver left front interior door panel. It's black in color.
The first step is to gently pry out the circular plastic screw cover located behind the door opener handle with the small flathead screwdriver. Remove the screw behind the door opener handle by turning it counter clockwise with the Torx T25 star bit screwdriver. Set the cover and screw aside in a safe place. Then move to the outer edge of the door panel and pry out the vinyl rubber trim panel near the top with the small flathead screwdriver. Remove the screw behind the cover with the Torx T25 screwdriver by turning it counter clockwise. Set the screw aside in a safe place. Then move to the front edge of the plastic trim piece along the side of the arm rest.
Gently pry off the front part of the trim piece with the small flathead screwdriver and gently pull it off the side of the arm rest. Be careful when you pull off the rear edge of the trim panel since there is a plastic hook on that side. Next pry out the rear edge of the plastic switch panel inside the arm rest. There is a plastic retaining tab at the front of the switch panel, so do not pry out the front edge to avoid breaking it. Carefully lift the rear of the electrical switch panel and remove it from the arm rest. Press the release button on the electrical connector and pull the plug straight out of the socket.
Set the switch panel aside in a safe place with the other trim pieces and screws. Once the switch panel has been removed, you'll see the last two screws that need to be removed. Remove the two screws behind the arm rest by turning them counter clockwise with the screwdriver. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. Then move to the top inner corner of the door panel and gently pry off the sail panel which contains the tweeter speaker with a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool. The sail panel is held in place by a few friction fasteners.
Press the release tab on the power plug and pull the tweeter speaker's electrical connector straight out of the socket. Set the tweeter speaker and sail panel assembly with the other parts. You should have removed a total of 4 plastic trim pieces and 4 screws. Move to the bottom edge of the door panel and firmly pull it towards yourself to disengage the white plastic pop rivet friction fasteners. You may need to insert a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool to begin popping out the friction fasteners. Continue pulling out the fasteners all along the bottom and sides of the panel.
Gently lift the plastic door panel up and off the metal door frame. Angle the top of the door panel towards yourself while supporting the bottom with your thighs.
Press the release tab on the light grey electrical connector and pull it straight out of the socket. Disconnect the door opener handle cable mechanism by gently pulling back the small black plastic handle. Lift the plastic rectangular box piece end of the door opener cable out of the bracket. Now you can separate the door panel from the frame and set it aside in a safe place. To remove the door speaker, first take out the screw on one side by turning it counter clockwise. Then remove the hex head screw on the other side with the and ratcheting wrench.
If you don't have a 5.5mm socket, you may also be able to use a slightly larger 6mm socket or needle nose pliers. Press the release button on the power connector and pull the plug straight out of the top of the speaker.
Pull the old speaker out of the door frame. The front door speakers can be replaced with 6 1/2' (6.5'), 6 3/4' (6.75') and 5 1/4' (5.25') sized aftermarket units. I'd recommend buying new from Crutchfield since they usually include any necessary electrical connector adapters and mounting brackets. Please verify your OEM speaker sizes and compatible replacements before ordering anything. To help reduce road noise make your new speakers sound better, apply some to the metal door frame.
It will stop rattles and vibrations when you crank up the volume. To replace the door panel, first hold it near the frame and support the bottom with your thighs. Then gently insert the plastic piece at the end of the door opener cable back in to the bracket on the door panel. Push the piece in to the bracket until it clicks securely in to place. Push the light grey power plug back in to the socket mounted near the top of the door frame. Pull the electrical connector for the switch panel out through the hole in the arm rest.
Hang the top edge of the door panel on to the metal lip on the door frame. Line up the white plastic pop rivet friction fasteners on the rear of the door panel with their corresponding holes in the metal door frame.
Firmly tap the bottom and sides of the door panel to push in the friction fasteners. Tighten the two screws behind the arm rest by turning them clockwise with the Torx T25 screwdriver. Push the electrical connector straight in to the socket at the bottom of the switch panel.
Insert the plastic tab at the front of the switch panel in to the arm rest first and then gently push down the rear part. Make sure that the switch panel is fully seated down in to the arm rest. Line up the trim piece that goes along the outer edge of the arm rest. First insert the plastic hook at the rear of the trim piece and then snap in the friction fasteners at the middle and front. Insert the screw behind the door opener handle and tighten it by turning it clockwise with the Torx T25 screwdriver. Push the small round black plastic screw cover in place.
Move to the outside edge of the door panel and insert the smaller black Torx T25 screw. Push the vinyl rubber screw cover back in to place. Push the power plug back in to the socket on the tweeter speaker. Line up the friction fasteners on the rear of the sail panel and push it back in to place.
Sit inside the vehicle, close the door, and verify that the door opener handle and electrical switches work properly. For more, check out my other.
